This year’s filing deadline for candidates running for Congress in Kansas was June 3, 2024. Fifteen candidates are running for Kansas’ four U.S. House districts, including five Democrats and 10 Republicans. That’s an average of 3.75 candidates per district. There was an average of 2.25 candidates per district in 2022, 4.75 candidates per district in 2020 and 6.00 in 2018.
2024 Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Class Announced, 12 to be Honored in Topeka, Oct. 13
Wichita, Kan. – Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Dunning, Jr., announced today the selection of 12 individuals to be inducted, Sunday, Oct. 13 in Topeka. The class includes seven individuals who have ties to Olympic competition, including a gold medalist, paralympic medalist and the only American to be named a head track and field starter for two Olympic Games. The group also includes national champion coaches, collegiate champions and All-Americans, and American-record holders.
Weenies and Martinis raises money for dogs with intervertebral disc disease
ICT Dachshunds hosted Weenies and Martinis on Sunday afternoon at Public at the Brickyard to raise money for their foundation, which helps Kansas residents and their dogs that are suffering from intervertebral disc disease and other back related issues.
Person hospitalized after driving into MainStay Suites
One person was hospitalized after a crash in northwest Emporia on Monday. Emporia Fire/EMS and Emporia Police responded to MainStay Suites, 2602 Candlewood Drive, just after noon after an SUV backed up partway into the hotel. Emporia Fire Capt. Ben Lienemann tells KVOE News the driver had an unspecified medical issue before the crash happened.

City Commission action and study meetings coming Tuesday
Emporia City Commissioners are convening a day earlier than normal for their regular action and study meetings this week. Commissioners will convene Tuesday at 11 am for their regular action meeting inside of the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium. Only three items are on the agenda including a resolution to establish a public hearing to possibly declare the Gazette Building Development as a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) in downtown Emporia.
Liberal’s Kappelmann and Hugoton’s Martin Play in Shrine Bowl
It wasn’t the final team result they were looking for, but what a week for Liberal’s Brooks Kappelmann and Hugoton’s Isaac Martin who competed for the West in the Kansas Shrine Bowl football game Saturday night at Welch Stadium in Emporia. The East won the game 36-25 over the West. Kappelmann played quarterback for the West and was 29-51 for 235 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He carried one time for six yards. Kappelmann was named Most Inspirational Player for the West at a ceremony on Friday night. Martin rotated in regularly at linebacker for the West. The two arrived in Hays Sunday June 23 and participated in West camp at Hays before departing for Emporia on Thursday. The game was played before a nearly capacity crowd Saturday night.
Dylan Dunn Makes Shrine Bowl History with East Team Victory
Emporia witnessed the end of a five-game losing streak for the East team in the Kansas Shrine Bowl, as they emerged victorious over the West with a score of 36-25 at Welch Stadium on Saturday night. Dylan Dunn, the quarterback from Blue Valley Southwest, made history by setting new Shrine Bowl records for pass completions (25), passing yards (307), and touchdowns (4), contributing significantly to the East’s first win since 2018.
