Cubs Should Look into Newly DFA'd Harold Ramirez
By Bobby Foster,
2024-06-07
As the Chicago Cubs remain stagnant, they're reaching a crucial juncture that will impact the trajectory of their season. Jed Hoyer has indicated the team is ready to add if need be. That's great, but there still hasn't been a decision about which way the Cubs will go.
On one hand, if the North Siders continue to linger under .500, they have some expendable pieces to move if need be. Conversely, the Cubs just hired MLB's highest-paid manager in Craig Counsell. The optics of selling at the trade deadline would be disastrous as it would indicate the team is headed in the wrong direction.
A potential addition that makes a lot of sense for the Cubs is Harold Ramirez. The veteran has put together a solid run overall as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays despite some struggles this season. It's a bit puzzling why the Rays designated him for assignment , but it provides an opportunity for the Cubs to strike.
Harold Ramirez North Side Reunion?
Harold Ramirez was traded by the Cubs to the Rays before the 2022 season. Given his production in Tampa Bay, it's fair to assume the Cubs would like to have that one back.
Fortunately for them, they now have the opportunity to right that wrong. Ramirez brings versatility in the outfield, meaning the Cubs would have no trouble fitting his bat into the lineup.
From 2022 to 2023, Ramirez finished with a batting average of over .300 . That alone should make him a hot commodity among teams looking for roster reinforcements entering the summer months.
While the Cubs formulate their plans for the remainder of this season, Ramirez would be an inexpensive immediate addition. At the very least, the team should be contemplating it.
Sitting 5.5 games out of first place, the Cubs need to make some changes if they have any hope of playing in October.
