Amid a historically bad season, the Chicago White Sox finally fired manager Pedro Grifol. Thursday's announcement comes after the White Sox tied an American League-record 21-game losing streak. The Sox snapped the skid with a rare victory on Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics but lost Wednesday's series finale to end a six-game road trip.

Recent rumblings suggested Pedro Grifol was at the end of the line , and Thursday's off day served as a logical time for the news to drop.

“As we all recognize, our team’s performance this season has been disappointing on many levels,” White Sox general manager Chris Getz said in a statement. “Despite the on-field struggles and lack of success, we appreciate the effort and professionalism Pedro and the staff brought to the ballpark every day. These two seasons have been very challenging. Unfortunately, the results were not there, and a change is necessary as we look to our future and the development of a new energy around the team.”

Grifol joined the White Sox before the 2023 season and amassed an abysmal 89-190 record as the team's skipper. The White Sox own an MLB-worst 28-89 record this season and are on pace to be one of baseball's worst teams of all time.

Per USA Today's Bob Nightengale , the White Sox will name an interim manager for the rest of the 2024 season before conducting a search for a replacement in the offseason.

Given his past managerial experience , bench coach Charlie Montoyo is a prime candidate to take the reins when the White Sox return to action Friday against the Chicago Cubs. Grady Sizemore, a longtime big-league outfielder and current member of the White Sox coaching staff, is another internal option who could be considered for the interim role.

As for a replacement, we'll have to wait and see what the White Sox' offseason search turns up.

While Pedro Grifol languished throughout the summer, media pundits floated Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker as a potential replacement on the South Side. A.J. Pierzynski has recently been connected to the job , though the Sox' former catcher clarified that the club hasn't approached him regarding the position and asserted that the noise was generated from rumors.
