Blackville-Hilda’s Jaquel Holman makes no secret of the fact that he would love to play college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

This summer, he’ll have the opportunity to earn a scholarship from the program.

On May 31, Holman will attend the first session of Shane Beamer Football Camp.

‘When I go to camp, they’re going to see how good I move and that’s really going to determine everything,” he told GamecockCentral.com.

Holman ran track for the first time in his life this year. By season’s end, he captured state championships in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 4×100 meter dash.

“It means a lot, especially where I came from,” he said. “When I first ever ran, I ran an 11.2 (in the 100 meters) and that was just horrible, horrible mechanics. By region time, I caught a 10.93. By Upper State, there was no looking back.”

It’s that combination of size and speed that has intrigued South Carolina. A significant next step is figuring out where he could slot on the defense.

“They really don’t know what they want me to play, but I know it’s going to be on the defensive side of the ball,” Holman said of the Gamecocks coaches. “I was talking to Coach White; he said he and Coach Gray, they’re going back and forth because they don’t know if my body is going to get too big and play safety and they don’t know if I’m going to really turn into a linebacker.”

The Citadel and Old Dominion have offered Holman so far. Others are showing interest, including Clemson and South Carolina.

“As a matter of fact, they’re showing the most interest out of everyone,” Holman said of the Gamecocks.

An South Carolina offer would be big here.

Said Holman: “I would really love an offer from Carolina. Of course, that’s my dream school, but you know, you keep your options open. It would mean a lot, because every kid wants an in-state offer. If you grew up in South Carolina, you’re really going to like Clemson or Carolina. So, I mean, any time an in-state school has interest in you, it’s a big deal.”
