Where does Texas go after DJ Sanders committed to Texas A&M?

Most schools would go back to the drawing board to come up with new options. Texas goes back to its big board and figures out a way. Old D-tackle targets include Zion Williams, Myron Charles, Kevin Wynn, and now DJ Sanders.

Current D-tackle targets include Zion Williams , Myron Charles , and now DJ Sanders . I’m not sure on Wynn, I haven’t heard much there.

Sanders jumped his timeline by a little over 24 hours to commit to Texas A&M. Personally, I think there’s some easy accounting to do there for why that was. If I’m right about that then this recruitment has shades of Josiah Sharma . Sharma, you’ll remember, was very, very close to picking Texas before selecting Oregon. We wrote a lot about how Texas was the pick and his personal favorite, how Kenny Baker “won” the recruitment but lost the commitment.

While we haven’t written the exact same about Sanders — we never wrote he was that close to picking Texas, though we should have — we have written that Kenny Baker did a very good job of connecting with Sanders and his family. That first occurred on a visit to Bellville and then it really occurred on Sanders’ official visit.

I would not lose hope on this recruitment but a motivated A&M will of course be a formidable foe.

I have no clue what will happen with Zion Williams . First thing is continuing to build a strong enough relationship that he’ll take his official visit this fall. You’d think that wouldn’t be too hard given Texas is hosting Georgia on October 18th.

There were interesting circumstances surrounding his canceled Texas official visit this June. Assuming the reasoning we heard was on the level, there’s nothing to worry about. If there is more to it, LSU might have a kung-fu grip on this recruitment and could have been behind his canceled visit.

Due to the strength of his relationship with Bo Davis this will be a tough flip no matter what but Texas and LSU are likely to have pretty disparate seasons while LSU continues to rebuild its defense. I also think Williams profiles well to Texas in general, just as a student.

If LSU has a kung-fu grip on Williams, Florida State has a carpal tunnel grip on Myron Charles . Florida State might have home field advantage but Texas remains in a pretty solid spot in that recruitment per a source in the deep southeast.

Antonio Coleman deserves a mention after the Alabama-Auburn-Alabama commit visited Texas in late July but that recruiting process with Texas is just getting started.

I’m not concerned about defensive tackle, outside of, at this point I’m not sure how exactly they’ll get to their goal of four defensive tackles since they don’t like to reach.
