Crimson Countdown: No. 21 Jeremiah Newcombe

The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.

The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables , getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

2024 outlook :

A bit of a mystery here. Newcombe was so quiet during the recruiting process. Never felt like we had a chance to get to know who he is and what to expect.

Now OU fans know his father, former Nebraska star Bobby Newcombe . So if Jeremiah is anything like his father, next few years should be a lot of fun.

Arriving in the summer puts Newcombe in a tough spot, too. With so many guys ahead of him, don’t expect big playing time. Perhaps special teams. If not, definitely circle scout team for his 2024 role.

2024 cornerback outlook

The cornerback room is another unit that has more depth than usual for the Sooners. Junior Gentry Williams returns for his third season and is expected to start at one spot, if he’s healthy. There are several players though pushing Williams for one of the two starting spots, including new San Diego State transfer Dez Malone and Louisville transfer Kani Walker, who is now in his third year in Norman. Young guys Jacobe Johnson and Makari Vickers have also been impressive, hoping to have a bigger role in 2024.
