Some four-star high school prospects who took six official visits over a three-month period and spent their summer as one of Florida’s most highly-touted offensive line recruits might get distracted by the outside world. But not 2025 Miami interior offensive line commit Max Buchanan.

Buchanan, the No. 241 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and Miami’s second highest-ranked offensive line commit in the 2025 cycle, shut down his recruitment after committing to the Hurricanes in late June and is focused on his senior season as his final months of high school approach. Orlando (Fla.) Seminole head coach Karl Calhoun said Buchanan has no distractions as he looks to cap off a tremendous high school career with a state title.

“Since he’s been in eighth grade, he’s been very determined and locked in (with football),” Calhoun said. “I don’t think he let (his recruitment) distract him. You know, his goal is to help bring us a state championship and he’s been very, very focused. That’s why he wanted to make sure his commitment (to Miami) was good and thorough so he can focus on the ultimate goal, and that’s for us to continue winning games and win us a championship.”

Buchanan has looked bigger, stronger and more aggressive since returning from his summer vacation, Calhoun said, and is “doing everything we wanted him to do” through the first week of fall camp. Calhoun acknowledged he’s come to expect plenty of Buchanan, who began practicing with varsity players when he was in seventh grade, but his constant exposure to high-level football and older players helped his development.

Buchanan will be the “staple” of Seminole’s offensive line at left tackle this season, although he’s expected to transition to guard at the college level. Buchanan has had some work at center as well, although Calhoun thinks Buchanan should have an easy transition to guard once he arrives at Miami.

“When you’re out there playing left tackle, you’re out there on an island,” Calhoun said. “When you’re playing guard, you’re surrounded by guys. I think his agility and how quick he can move, I think (playing guard) will be easy for him. We trap him and pull him when he’s at tackle, so I think trapping and pulling when he’s at guard I think will be even easier for him. Obviously everybody’s good in college, but I think guard won’t be a hard transition for him.”

So where does Calhoun want to see Buchanan take a step forward this fall?

“Just being nasty, just being dirty all the time,” Calhoun said. “He’s very nasty, he’s very mean, but I want him to do it all the time. I told him, ‘I want you to finish blocks. I want you to put people in the ground. I want you to establish your will.’ So he’s been doing that, and obviously he’s done that throughout his career, but I want him to be like, ‘Okay, if you are one of the top O-linemen in the country, then a high school D-lineman should not be able to do anything with you.'”

    CaneSport’s Take

I’m particularly high on Buchanan in this class and fully believe he’ll develop into a reliable starter for Miami thanks to his strength, work ethic and unmatched motor. Buchanan operates at full speed and is borderline obsessed with improving his game, which I think makes him the perfect offensive line prospect for coaches like Mario Cristobal and Alex Mirabal.
