NC State Newsstand: Davin Vann named to Bednarik Award Watch List

NC State linebacker Payton Wilson won the Chuck Bednarik Award, which honors the top defensive player in college football, last fall. Now, the Wolfpack has a chance to keep the trophy in Raleigh.

Graduate defensive end Davin Vann was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List on Monday, looking to become the second Wolfpack player to win the honor.

While Wilson was an elite talent a year ago, Vann has a chance to build off his showing. The Cary, N.C., native has totaled 103 tackles and 14 sacks in 43 career games with the Wolfpack, including a career-best 42 tackles and 5.5 sacks last fall.

Vann, who wears the No. 1 jersey for his leadership, is looking to fill Wilson’s production on and off the field when it comes to his impact as a player and leader. Although the award is only meant to honor the on-field numbers for each defender, Vann has the opportunity to cap his legacy in a similar way to Wilson.

The Bednarik Award will announce its semifinalists on Nov. 12, while the finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 26. The winner will be revealed during ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 12.
