Herbert Scroggins III coming to Miami Hurricanes with ‘an advanced skillset,’ could see field sooner than later

Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military School defensive coordinator Galen Houston has no doubt in Miami four-star EDGE commit Herbert Scroggins III’s ability. And he thinks the No. 382 overall prospect’s skillset could help him see the field sooner than later.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound defender, who Houston believes would be best used as a stand-up EDGE who can occasionally drop into coverage (which typically describes a JACK defender in Miami defensive coordinator Lance Guidry’s defense), has long played versatile hybrid roles at the high school level and is ready to contribute in college, Houston said. Scroggins is currently locked in with the Hurricanes after committing to Miami in late June and has continued to prepare for his senior season this summer, and Houston thinks his skillset could make him a candidate for early playing time after he arrives on campus.

“He gets to see it all,” Houston said. “From working on drops (into coverage) to pass rushing to setting the edge to reading guards, multiple ways of block destruction and pass coverage. So I think he’ll be coming into Miami with an advanced skillset that should help him be able to project playing early for them, because I think he’ll take well to strength and conditioning in a program like that. …I think he’ll have a major opportunity to make a lot of plays and play early at the University of Miami, for sure.”

Houston said Scroggins is “committed and finished” with his recruitment and is comfortable with his commitment to the Hurricanes. He said Scroggins is primarily focused on finishing his senior season strong before enrolling at Miami, and Houston has come to expect plenty from his star defender. Scroggins has always been an “excellent” practice player, a team leader and one of the program’s hardest workers, and he doesn’t think he could ask as much more from any person or player.

Especially with a motor like Scroggins’.

“He’s one of those kids that never stops,” Houston said. “He just has a will and a relentless pursuit and hustle to the football. His ability to still be able to bend and run and be agile with his size and with his length, I think he can still add another 20 pounds and still not lose his athleticism and that mobility. I think he has an ability to translate speed into power, so he can beat you in a lot of different ways. …He just has a relentless pursuit and mentality as far as getting to the football and making plays on the ball.”

Scroggins is expected to return to Miami for at least one game-day visit this fall.

    CaneSport’s Take

I’ve been particularly high on Scroggins and believe he may be one of the most underrated commits in Miami’s 2025 class given his combination of size, strength and athleticism. I think he could be the ideal JACK defender in Guidry’s defense, and his disciplined “yes sir/no sir” attitude makes him extremely coachable. I think Miami found a gem in Scroggins.
