Calling my shot: Where I think Miami’s top uncommitted recruiting targets will land this month

There aren’t many uncommitted 2025 prospects left on Miami’s board after landing 20 commitments to this point. But a handful of remaining recruits are closing in on decisions later this month.

Coveted five-star receiver Jaime Ffrench , four-star cornerback Ben Hanks Jr. and four-star safety Bryce Fitzgerald are all expected to announce commitments before the end of the month, and Miami is a finalist for all three prospects. Local four-star running back Byron Louis is also expected to announce in the near future, although he’s not expected to make a decision until September.

So today, I’ll be calling my shot on where I think Ffrench, Hanks and Fitzgerald will commit. The three have publicly set commitment dates before the end of August.

It’s always possible another recruit suddenly decides to make an announcement before the end of the month, but for this exercise, we’ll only consider the three Miami priority targets who have set hard commitment dates.

5-star WR Jaime Ffrench | No. 18 overall prospect, No. 4 WR
    – Considering Texas, LSU, Miami, Tennessee

    – Aug. 30 commitment

+++ Ffrench immediately became one of the hottest uncommitted names in the 2025 class after he decommitted from Alabama in January following Nick Saban’s retirement, but he recently narrowed his list to four schools ahead of his commitment on his mother’s birthday Aug. 30. Ohio State was viewed as the leader at one point in his recruitment, but Texas quickly gained momentum this summer and has been the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine’s leader for some time. But while Miami was once viewed as a dark horse that continued to stick around for the five-star prospect, it now feels like the Hurricanes are a major contender who could absolutely land Ffrench. Miami hosted Ffrench for a midweek official visit in June and brought him to campus for the Hurricanes’ end-of-summer recruiting cookout in late July (where four-star quarterback commit Luke Nickel made his recruiting pitch as well) and has continued to push hard over the last several weeks. LSU is still a major contender as well and has been a consistent threat in his recruitment. Right now, I’m leaning very, very slightly toward the Longhorns, but there’s still plenty of time for some more twists and turns in this one.

    My prediction: Texas

4-star CB Ben Hanks Jr. | No. 99 overall prospect, No. 11 CB
    – Considering Florida, Miami, Louisville
    – Aug. 16 commitment

+++ Hanks is a Florida legacy with strong ties to Gainesville, and while Miami was once viewed as the favorite to land the local four-star prospect (and I was once pretty close to entering an RPM in favor the Hurricanes), it’s now looking like the Gators are in control heading into Friday’s decision. CaneSport confirmed GatorsOnline’s report Monday that Hanks’ twin sister, Bianca, being able to play volleyball at the school Ben attends could play a significant factor and Florida being able to offer it. Louisville is continuing to push hard as well. I’ve been steadily losing confidence in Miami’s chances for Hanks for roughly the last month, and I think he’ll end up in Gainesville.

    My prediction: Florida

    4-star S Bryce Fitzgerald | No. 123 overall prospect, No. 13 S
    – Considering Miami, Florida, Florida State, LSU
    – Aug. 17 commitment

+++ Fitzgerald has strong ties to Miami and attends head coach Mario Cristobal’s alma mater, which offensive line coach Alex Mirabal also coached at, and this race still feels tight as a decision approaches. Fitzgerald also visited Miami for the Hurricanes’ recruiting cookout in July and spoke well of the Canes, although he told CaneSport roughly a week later he felt Florida State and LSU were beginning to separate from the pack. Florida State has been a strong contender for Fitzgerald for awhile. He also has family at LSU, although he’s always had interest in remaining in the Sunshine State. Florida is still a contender as well, although I’m much less confident about the Gators’ chances given the pressure currently on Florida’s coaching staff to win this fall. Fitzgerald has already said his recruitment will remain open after he commits, and I think Miami will have a chance to flip him regardless of where he initially chooses if the Canes win big this fall. It doesn’t feel like this recruitment is over yet, and it’s still very tight heading into Saturday’s announcement, but right now, I’d pick Florida State.

    My prediction: Florida State
