Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 15 include the latest on Sean Clifford, more accolades for Abdul Carter, and more. It’s time to review Thursday’s top tweets and stories about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with the latest on Penn State alum Sean Clifford . The second-year Green Bay Packer will start the NFC North team’s preseason contest against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, according to head coach LaFluer. He will do so in place of first-teamer Jordan Love, who is not scheduled to play. Clifford is battling Michael Pratt for the right to back up Love during the regular season. The former Nittany Lion threw for 111 yards in the Packers’ win over Cleveland last Saturday and is the leader in the clubhouse to be the team’s QB2. But, Pratt has reportedly gained ground in recent practices.

“Sean struggled a little bit the first week or so of practice,” Green Bay quarterback coach Tom Clements said on Monday, per Sports Illustrated . “We weren’t protecting the ball as well as we need to; that’s gotten better. Sean did a better job. probably Family Night was one of his better practices, and then he had a good game.

“That was kind of Sean last year. He got in the games, and he practices hard but sometimes in a game you just have that extra little spark to make you play a little better, and everyone else is trying to play as well as they can. He has that quality about him of being a gamer.”

In other news, Penn State defender Abdul Carter is a first-team preseason All-American by The Action Network and a second-team pick of ESPN. It continues an offseason of praise for the All-Big Ten linebacker who will play both that spot but also plenty at defensive end this fall. Additionally, guard Sal Wormley was a second-team preseason All-American pick by The Action Network.

    Quote of the day

“He’s been a real pleasant surprise, he really has. Very good against the run. I think as he continues to gain confidence and get his body back from that amount of time off with his injury, I think he’ll get better and better and better in the pass game. We were excited about hopefully what he would have been able to do last year, but we hadn’t really had a chance to see him a whole lot. So he’s been a nice, pleasant surprise for us for depth inside. And I think as he continues to get back into football shape, I think he could be competing for a starting job.”
