Miami Hurricanes 6-3, 310-pound true freshman Artavius Jones is a massive future piece for this team, and while he may seem happy-go-lucky in today’s CaneSport’s Inside The Lines feature, that belies his inner fire.

He’s putting in the work this fall, striving to improve that 1 percent every day.

“Every day I’m here to compete, do anything, do my best,” Jones said. “A lot of guys out here are very good, and we’re just competing and doing our thing, trying to win.”

As for his transition to this level, Jones said that “It’s going amazing, much harder than I expected. But they made it where I’m comfortable and I can come here and do my thing.”

Jones chose Miami out of Blountstown, Fla., as a consensus 4-star prospect. He was the No. 239 overall prospect and No. 24 defensive lineman per the On3 Industry Rankings, and was the No. 7 defensive tackle in the nation per ESPN.

He chose Miami over offers from Florida State , LSU, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others.

While it’s expected that guys like Simeon Barrow and CJ Clark, who were brought in from the transfer portal will start, with other more veteran players like Marley Cook, Anthony Campbell and Ahmad Moten or even second-year Joshua Horton looking to provide depth, Jones hopes to work his way up and earn some reps as the season goes along.

Now he’s working to soak up all the information he can from older Hurricanes players.

“We have some older guys that are very good, want to be second round, third round, first round picks,” Jones said. “I just learn from them. Being around them and learning – they took me under their wing.”
