Georgia offense holding sky-high expectations with strong foundation

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia’s offense is expected to be among the best this fall. The Bulldogs moved the ball well and lit up the scoreboard last season, finishing No. 5 in the nation in both total offense (496.5 yards per game) and points per game (40.1). With quarterback Carson Beck back and surrounded by a plethora of weapons, a drop off of any sort would come as a disappointment to many.

While expecting those sorts of numbers without the likes of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey might be lofty, the Bulldogs certainly believe they’re capable of it. Georgia linebacker Chaz Chambliss said he goes against “the best offense in the nation” daily while offensive lineman Earnest Greene says the sky is the limit.

“The sky is the limit … It’s just a matter of us up front making sure that those guys can do that by protecting Carson, letting him get the ball where it needs to get to or running the ball wherever it needs to go,” Greene told reporters . “The ceiling is really high for this offense, and we’re making sure we do everything we need to to reach that ceiling.”

Greene dug in, too. Little needs to be said about Beck, who’s among the preseason favorites to bring home the Heisman Trophy come December. As for the running backs, receivers and tight ends, he sees the potential for explosiveness and big plays.

“Ultra talented. The whole room is really talented,” the Los Angeles native and second-year starter at left tackle said about the Bulldog backfield . “Guys are pretty special, a lot of explosive plays, just doing stuff that’s kind of electric and dynamic as far as making people miss in space and all types of stuff like that. We’ve got a pretty electric room and I’m excited to pave the way for them this year.”

“Not just the running back room that I talked about but the receiver room and tight end room,” he added . “We’ve got a lot of dynamic and explosive guys that can make stuff happen.”

Of course it starts up front where Greene and Georgia’s offensive line look to “pave the way.” UGA returns four different players with starting experience ( Tate Ratledge , Xavier Truss , Earnest Greene and Dylan Fairchild ) and will play others that were part of the rotation last season. It’s a group that provides tons of confidence and is the foundation for a unit that gives Georgia’s defense quite the test.

“I firmly believe we always have the best offense in the country,” Chambliss said . “We have some of the best talent in the world collectively with the best coaches. The coaches take that talent and put it into a system that plays to everybody’s strengths.”

“Every day that we’re out there we just know there’s going to be wins and losses,” he added . “They’re just as talented as us on defense, and they’re just experienced.”

Georgia’s defense will match up against its offense in a game-like situation for a second straight Saturday between the hedges as the Bulldogs scrimmage again. They’ll be glad – and prepared – to play against a different opponent later this month in a season-opening top-15 battle with Clemson (Aug. 31, 12:00 p.m. ET, ABC) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
