Coveted WR Deion Thomas talks first trip to Tennessee

Westlake High School (Ga.) three-star wide receiver Deion Thomas made his way to Tennessee at the end of July to take his first look at the Vols. Following the trip, he shared his thoughts and more with Volquest.

“I have been knowing about Tennessee,” Thomas said of what made him want to come visit Knoxville. . “I have always been interested in Tennessee and wanted to come up here, and it was nice. It is beautiful.”

Throughout the visit, Thomas spent plenty of time with Tennessee Wide Receivers Coach Kelsey Pope.

“Coach Pope’s a cool guy, honestly,” Thomas said of Pope. “He’s just real cool, honestly. He is really genuine. I like that.”

Thomas was also able to learn more about Tennessee’s offense during the visit.

“We talked about it,” Thomas said of Tennessee’s offense. “We were in meetings. It’s really close, like, to how mine is at my school right now. They usually get the ball out, let their playmakers make plays.”

At Westlake, Thomas is teamed up with current 2025 Tennessee Wide Receiver Commitment Travis Smith. He says he has heard from Smith about teaming up on Rocky Top.

“That is my brother, Travis, for sure,” Thomas said of this. “It is something we have talked about.”

The one thing Thomas learned about Tennessee, that he did not know prior to the visit, was that legendary safety Eric Berry played collegiately at Tennessee

“I didn’t know Eric Berry came here, honestly,” the three-star pass-catcher said of this. “Honestly, I didn’t know that. I just found out more about, like, the history of the school. It was dope (to learn).”

As Thomas continues to work through the recruiting process, he knows what he will focus on as he looks at each school he considers.

“Honestly, I want to go in somewhere where I can come in and compete, and somewhere that feels like home.”

Thomas plans to return to Knoxville in October when the Vols play host to Alabama.
