Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna three-star Miami defensive tackle commit Donta Simpson flipped from Maryland to the Canes a few weeks ago, but two programs are still pursuing the local defensive star.

Maryland and Florida Atlantic, both of whom Simpson took official visits to this summer, are still in contact with the No. 657 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and Miami’s most recent commit in the 2025 class. Simpson still feels he made the right decision flipping from Maryland to Miami — one his family feels particularly good about too — but doesn’t plan to shut down his recruitment until signing day.

“It feels like I made the right decision, because Miami is home,” Simpson said. “It’s in my backyard, so knowing that I get to play for my home team, it feels great. Feels awesome.”

Simpson believes FAU is trending up and has faith in Owls head coach Tom Herman and had enough interest in Maryland to initially commit to the Terps this summer, but Miami hasn’t slowed its approach since flipping him Aug. 2. Hurricanes co-defensive line coaches Jason Taylor and Joe Salave’a and head coach Mario Cristobal continue to communicate with him and “just make me feel like I’m at home.”

Miami’s staff continues to send Simpson video clips from Canes practices, practice schedules and workouts that “make me feel like I want to be there,” he said. He added Miami’s effort in practice and promise of the upcoming season have continued to excite him about his commitment.

“(Miami) is a better position for me (than Maryland),” Simpson said. “My parents, my family, my friends can all watch me play. They feel great. They feel excited.”

Simpson said he plans to keep his recruitment open until signing day but is solid in his commitment to the Hurricanes. He is not actively looking to decommit and plans to be in Coral Gables in January.

Simpson plans to return to Miami for home games this fall.

    CaneSport’s Take

Miami needs to continue adding defensive line talent in the 2025 class, but Simpson was a good start. Michigan commit Nate Marshall is still in play for the Canes, and Miami will continue working to steal Five-Star Plus+ defensive tackle and No. 1 defensive lineman Elijah Griffin from Georgia’s backyard, but the Hurricanes are facing an uphill battle for Griffin. However, don’t be surprised if new potential defensive tackle targets emerge this fall.
