The high school football season is right around the corner and to build up the anticipation, Lettermen Row is going to roll out a primer for every Ohio State commit. There are 24 pledges to the Buckeyes’ 2025 class and we will discuss things we want to see from the commits, and one big game for the pledge. This is story No. 16 .

COLUMBUS — Ohio State has the reputation of being a reputable program for developing defensive linemen. Position coach Larry Johnson has six verbal commitments for his 2025 haul including four-star Newberry (Fla) defensive tackle Jarquez Carter .

The 6-foot-2, 270-pound Carter committed to the Buckeyes on July 18, exactly one month after his official visit. The Buckeyes were a dark horse in the race for Carter until they emerged as the clear front-runner just a few days before his announcement.

Carter gives Ohio State another critical depth piece and an underrated talent. His recruitment, for now, is over, and his senior season is rapidly approaching. Lettermen Row lists out a few things we’re eager to see from him and highlights one big game on his schedule.

    Things to Watch

When Jarquez Carter committed to Ohio State, the Mike Hall comparisons were abundant.

Assistant defensive line coach LaAllan Clark posted on X “Mike Hall 2.0” which is some awfully lofty praise and expectation. But it’s just. The strength and speed Carter possesses is eye-opening. It’s the first thing that shows up when you watch the tape. We need to see more of that. The Buckeyes sought out Carter for a reason, he needs to show that reason early and often throughout his senior season.

It’s more than just strength and speed, however. Those comparisons come from his ability to reach the quarterback. Where some of the criticism came with Hall was in the run game. 2.0 means improved, updated. Carter will have to be a force in the run game. Whether that’s taking on double teams to free up linebackers behind him or destroying blocks to make the play.

Consistency while improving. That’s the key for Carter this fall.

    One Big Game

Carter and Newberry lost in the first round of the playoffs against Hawthorne by 20 points last fall. It lost to Hawthorne in week two of the regular season as well, only by 30. Well, Carter and Newberry get another crack at Hawthorne this fall.

A final opportunity to avenge a thorn in Carter and Newberry’s side.
