In what can only be termed stunning news, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz has been suspended for one game for a recruiting rules violation. The news was first reported by Scott Dochterman of The Athletic that the Iowa football program will be without Ferentz for the first time in his tenure.

Ferentz has a 196-119 record as Iowa’s head coach. He ranks third in wins in Big Ten Football history. Overall he has a 208-140 record as a head coach, which covers 28 years. The last time Iowa played a football game without Ferentz on the sidelines was November 21, 1998, which was a 49-7 loss at Minnesota in Hayden Fry’s final game.

Without Ferentz on the sidelines, Iowa will likely elevate associate head coach Seth Wallace into the head coach role when Iowa hosts Illinois State on Saturday, August 31 st . Wallace was elevated to the associate head coach role, which is in addition to coaching linebackers, this spring.

Kirk Ferentz is scheduled to meet with the media in Iowa City on Thursday at 1:30 pm to address the situation.
