Penn State updates for Aug. 28 include news from the NFL’s 53-man roster cutdown day, a potential change to the NCAA transfer portal, and more. It’s time to review Wednesday’s top stories about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Numerous Penn State alums made it through the NFL’s roster downsize on Tuesday before the regular season starts. However, not all former Nittany Lions who were in pro training camps made their respective teams. The list of program connections cut includes quarterbacks Sean Clifford (Green Bay) and Trace McSorley (Washington), receivers Allen Robinson and KJ Hamler (New York Giants and Buffalo, respectively), defensive tackle PJ Mustipher (Eagles), linebacker Brandon Smith (Eagles) cornerbacks Amani Oruwariye (Jacksonville), Kalen King (Green Bay), Daequan Hardy (Buffalo), and Tariq Castro-Fields (Washington), safety Adrian Amos (Jacksonville), and defender Jonathan Sutherland (Giants). All will now try to find a new NFL home, either via the practice squad or perhaps a signing later in the season.

In other news, the NCAA D1 Football Oversight Committee has officially proposed eliminating the spring transfer window in favor of one 30-day window that would run from the Monday after FBS conference championship games through early January. If passed, the window would last from Dec. 9 – Jan. 7 this year for any player on a team not in the Playoff. For those who are, the “notification-of-transfer window would also be open for five consecutive days after that team’s last game,” the NCAA writes.

The NCAA Division I Council will vote on the proposal in October.

    Quote of the day

“I think for me, I’ve been attempting to build relationships with everybody, but it’s really going to be keeping it real with everyone and stepping up in crucial moments. It’s having those tough conversation when its needed and being the one to step up and say certain things when not a lot of people will be comfortable doing so. That’s my big thing. Pulling the great out of everybody and pushing everyone to be their best. And I need to be the same person every day.”
