The Miami Dolphins have signed Mike McDaniel to a contract extension to remain the team’s head coach through the 2028 NFL season, according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN .

“I’m told McDaniel has an especially strong working relationship with GM Chris Grier, CEO Tom Garfinkel and cap guru Brandon Shore. It’s the type of cohesive group that owner Steve Ross covets,” Darlington said in his report.

McDaniel, 41, became the 11th head coach in Dolphins history in 2022, and has grown to become one of the league’s best in his two seasons wearing the headset. He led Miami to a 9-8 record and playoff appearance in 2022 before improving to 11-6 in 2023. Both seasons, however, ended in disappointment as Miami went home in the AFC Wild Card Round.

That being said, it was the first time in 23 years that the Dolphins reached the postseason in consecutive years. The offense has become a must-watch unit under McDaniel, ranking first in the NFL this past season. Miami averaged 401.3 yards per game and 29.2 points per game.

Dolphins have all the pieces in place to win under Mike McDaniel

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa led the league in passing in 2023, throwing for 4,624 yards. He added 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on 69.3% passing. The Dolphins rewarded him with a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension with $167.1 million guaranteed earlier this offseason.

Tagovailoa’s emergence as one of league’s best signal callers coincided with the arrival of star wideout Tyreek Hill , who has become the focal point of McDaniel’s offense. Hill has tallied 238 receptions for 3,509 yards and 20 touchdowns since arriving in Miami via trade by the Kansas City Chiefs. Miami rolls out one of the better tailback duos in the league in Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane and returns a defense which ranked 10th in the NFL last season.

All the pieces are in place for Miami to get over the hump and win its first playoff game since Dec. 30, 2000. The Dolphins are putting their faith in McDaniel to be the coach to lead them there and beyond.
