Paul Finebaum: LSU loss to USC is ‘crushing’ but season not over for Tigers

Paul Finebaum didn’t want to hit the panic button for LSU and Brian Kelly following Sunday’s loss to USC in the opener.

While it was a “crushing” loss for the Tigers, Finebaum still believes the Tigers can make a run. Simply put, they have to figure it out fast though.

Finebaum pointed out how the schedule favors LSU from now on.

“I was about to punch myself in the leg, but I wouldn’t continue talking,” Finebaum said on Get Up , referencing Brian Kelly’s fiery postgame . “This program, it’s a crushing loss, but it’s not over for LSU. And the reason why it’s not Greeny, is that they have a favorable schedule the rest of the way. And what I mean by that is we’re in the new era, just for those who woke up and didn’t remember, this is 2024. I mean, there’s no game they can’t win on that schedule. They don’t have Georgia this year, and they have Alabama at home. That’s really important.

“They also have Ole Miss at home, which may be the third or fourth best team, and they don’t have Texas, so they are missing two of the top five or six teams in the country.”

Finebaum just doesn’t want to hear any delusional takes regarding LSU and where the team fits in the national title picture. Frankly, the Tigers aren’t in it according to the ESPN commentator.

“So they have to figure out a way back, though, and I saw enough from that team that would give me hope,” Finebaum said. “What I can’t stand every year on this Monday, Greeny, is having to answer for some stupid decision made, whether it’s on the sidelines or in discipline for LSU.

“And when Brian Kelly walked into that press conference and showed emotion, then it was too late. I don’t want to hear it after the game. I don’t want to see his fists through the table after the game. I want to see it before the game and during the game. It’s on him. And don’t give me this ‘I need to do a better job coaching.’ You’re paid $11 million to do the coaching into the game and throughout the game, not acting after the game.”
