Dak Prescott still does not have a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys, but it looks like we now know why. On the latest episode of Scoop City , NFL insider Dianna Russini explained the hold-up between Prescott and the Cowboys.

“The hold up at this point from what I understand is about the years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to,” Russini said, per RJ Ochoa of SB Nation . “While, it’s assumed, that Dak is going to be paid at the top of the market, the Dallas Cowboys are aware of that. It’s… do they want to put themselves in a position, contractually, that will keep Dak in Dallas longer than two, three, four years. And that’s what Dak is looking for. He’s looking for a long-term commitment from Dallas.

“So the hold up here is really the belief from the Dallas Cowboys. This is a guy who’s won a lot of games. But is that enough? Winning’s not enough for Jerry Jones. We know this. They want to do more… they don’t want to just be the team that wins a lot of games. They want to be the team that can play in the Super Bowl.”

Jerry Jones is ‘such a fan’ of Dak Prescott

Prescott has been the Cowboys starting QB for eight seasons and has posted a 73-41 record. But when it comes to the postseason, the 31-year-old quarterback has a 2-5 record and has never made it past the divisional round. He is in the final year of his current deal and has a salary cap hit of $55 million.

Last week, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones explained Prescott’s current situation with the team. “You could easily say, if you haven’t seen it by now, you haven’t seen it. I’m such a fan of Dak,” Jones said . “And I appreciate all of the great things that we all know are there. And I appreciate his work ethic probably more than anything. I can’t tell you how proud I am that we’ve got him this year to start this campaign. … Dak’s situation right now for me has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.”
