RFK Racing close to expanding to three cars in 2025, NASCAR insider names driver

With the 2024 NASCAR season in its final 10 weeks, the 2025 season is becoming more clear, including for RFK Racing. A new report suggests that the team is close to expanding to a third charter.

Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic reported on Wednesday night that RKF Racing is planning on acquiring a third charter, either purchasing or leasing, and they plan to put Ryan Preece into that car for 2025.

Bianchi believes that an announcement will be made in the coming weeks. The main reason why RFK will be able to expand is that a new major sponsor will be coming to the team next season.

“Kroger, one of the biggest supermarket chains in the United States, is considered one of the biggest sponsors within NASCAR to the extent that for four years it funded two full-time teams at JTG Daugherty Racing,” Bianchi wrote. “That stint included serving as primary sponsor for two years with Buescher and three years with Preece when each drove for the team.”

JTG Daugherty and Kroger are set to part ways after this season. It appears that Kroger will take their business over to Roush Fenway Keselowski for 2025. They will likely serve as a full-team sponsor and will allow for the third team to operate. Preece has sponsorships as well with companies like United Rentals, which have been with him for years.

Now, where are they going to get this charter? Why are they going to pick Ryan Preece?

    RFK Racing expanding for 2025

So, everyone knows that three charters were sold this season. Stewart-Haas Racing is shutting down, Gene Haas is keeping a charter for Haas Factory Team. That means three were put on the market earlier this season.

When that happened, Front Row Motorsports, Trackhouse Racing, and 23XI Racing were named as the teams most likely to expand by purchasing a charter from SHR. Well, two of those teams have made announcements.

We know that FRM and Trackhouse have bought Stewart-Haas charters. So, if RFK Racing buys a charter, that means 23XI is going to be left out. However, there is another way. Rick Ware Racing is currently in the RFK shop and are in an alliance.

RWR is also in trouble of NASCAR possibly taking away a charter for finishing in the bottom of the standings for so many seasons. That is, if RWR doesn’t show improvement (they have) and NASCAR deems it necessary. Then again, if RFK Racing leases one of those charters, it would surely improve the average finish of that charter.

Ryan Preece is a veteran driver. He can keep his car clean most weeks. So far this season he has four DNFs. But he also gets results on certain tracks. In shaky SHR equipment he has a top-10 at Martinsville and a top-5 at Nashville. In 2023 he won the pole at Martinsville. You also know he’s going to get you in the top-30 in the standings at least.

RFK Racing is preparing to expand. What do you think of the move?
