Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was reportedly detained Sunday ahead of the team’s opener Sunday.

It is initially unclear why Hill was put into handcuffs Sunday morning. It was later confirmed it was due to a driving citation. Miami opens up against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1:00 p.m. ET.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Hill will still play today after being detained.

“Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill was detained by police today entering the stadium for a driving violation, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus. But Rosenhaus said Hill will play today,” Schefter wrote on Twitter.

Schefter and ESPN’s Jeff Darlington also reported Hill was cited for reckless driving after being pulled over for speeding. Hill and police had a verbal altercation which led to the star wide receiver being put in handcuffs.

The Dolphins released a statement following the incident, confirming Hill will play.

““This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the statement read. “He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

Hill recently agreed to a new three-year, $90 million contract extension this summer.

He was named the No. 1 player in the NFL going into the 2024 season in its Top 100 countdown. Prior to signing his deal, Hill made it clear he wanted to finish his career in South Florida.

“Ensuring I’m a Dolphin for life,” Hill said . “That’s No. 1. That’s priority No. 1, man. This is obviously the best situation for myself and the family. I don’t think it could get any better, whether it’s just to live in an establishment in the state and the taxes. Everything. The weather. Everything that comes with just living in Miami is just beautiful, man. We love it.”

Hill started his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. There, he became a star in the sport and a Super Bowl champion. He was traded to Miami in 2022 and has continued to thrive, being named an All-Pro in each of his two seasons with the Dolphins.

During the 2023 season, Hill saw his Madden rating boosted to 99 overall, which is where it is to start the 2024 season. He posted a league-high 1,799 receiving yards on 119 receptions, finishing second in the league in catches. He also tied for first in receiving touchdowns with 13.

“And it’s awesome just to be here,” Hill said about his time in Miami. “You know, coaches are wonderful, teammates are wonderful and I’m like a 20-minute flight from the Bahamas. So I can just go to Bahamas anytime I want to and do what I got to do.”

Over the first eight seasons of his career, he’s averaged 1,267 yards per season. Hill only finished two seasons with less than 1,000 receiving yards.
