SUNY Upstate seeking residents for 18-month dementia study
A dementia prevention study originating from Columbia University is about to get underway soon in Syracuse. SUNY Upstate Medical University is seeking local residents to participate in the “MAP… or Metformin in Alzheimer’s Dementia Prevention Study.” Top geriatric researchers are looking to confirm whether the drug can help prevent those with mild cognitive impairment from getting full blown Alzheimer’s disease. Upstate medical geriatric chair Sharon Brangman says studies are promising.

Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse football program has 27 verbal commitments in the Class of 2025, the second-most in the country trailing only Rutgers. In recent years, that large number of commitments would mean the Orange was finished with recruiting. Until a rule change in 2023, schools were limited to taking 25 new players in a single year. The limit was changed, in part because schools needed to be able to accept and replace transfers.
Landmark Properties, W5 Group to Develop 600-Bed Community Near Syracuse University
Syracuse, N.Y. — A partnership between Landmark Properties and W5 Group has acquired a 2-acre site for the development of The Standard at Syracuse, a student housing project near Syracuse University in New York. The development will be located at 910 Madison St. in the city’s University Hill neighborhood. Upon completion, the community will offer over 600 beds across 210 units in studio through five-bedroom configurations. Each unit will be fully furnished and offer bed-to-bath parity. Shared amenities will include a 24-hour fitness center, sauna, study areas and a large outdoor hot tub. The community will also feature a 220-space parking garage for resident use. The property was formerly home to the Temple Concord sanctuary, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The sanctuary will be preserved and incorporated in the development as a 4,750-square-foot amenity space. Current plans for the building call for the transformation of the space into a gathering area. Landmark Construction, the in-house general contractor for Landmark Properties, will manage construction of the project, a timeline for which was not provided.

Clay, N.Y. – On maps of the planned Micron Technology campus in Clay sits a trio of boxes, outlined in red, straddling the northern end of Burnet Road. Those three parcels, totaling 22 acres, are the only pieces of land Onondaga County has not gobbled up for Micron to build an enormous chipmaking plant.
