Movie Review: ‘Arthur’ still does the best that he can do

With certain movies, it takes just the right stars to make them really click.

A case in point is “Arthur,” the buoyant 1981 comedy that Turner Classic Movies shows Saturday, Sept. 7, as part of a salute to female lead Liza Minnelli. The fact that title star Dudley Moore owned the film was underscored by Russell Brand’s 2011 attempt at a remake; while that may have its fans, they’re undoubtedly outnumbered by those who appreciate the special qualities Moore initially brought to the title part of a New Yorker as irresponsible as he is wealthy.

Writer-director Steve Gordon custom-fit the part of Arthur Bach to Moore’s self-deprecating whimsy, with the perpetually tipsy millionaire picking up women from the back seat of his chauffeured Rolls-Royce. (“Are you a hooker?,” he asks one lady incredulously upon realizing what her profession is. “I just thought I was doing great with you!”)

As content as Arthur might remain to stay ensconced in his world of bubble baths and toy trains, two things change him: his relationship with his stern manservant Hobson (John Gielgud, in a deservedly Oscar-winning performance), which takes an unexpected turn; and Arthur’s newfound affection for sassy waitress Linda (Minnelli), who might inspire him not to go through with his arranged marriage ... which would be a turn his family would not want.

In many ways, “Arthur” is a modern fairy tale, and it takes Moore’s sense of wonderment and impishness to pull it off fully. He goes in and out of that state so convincingly, it’s never a disappointment when he returns to it after seemingly having made strides toward maturity.
