Suspect dead after stabbing, shooting woman, using child as human shield: deputies

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was shot and killed by Florida deputies after he stabbed and shot a woman, before using his child as a human shield, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff John Mina said deputies responded to a domestic dispute on Friday night at an Orlando home on Colon Oaks Lane after he said the suspect shot and stabbed the mother of his child.

“He remained inside the house with his child and a gun and refused to surrender,” the sheriff said in a press conference.

The standoff, which lasted several hours, ended when SWAT officials shot and killed the man, who was holding the gun and the child. Sheriff Mina said they are not releasing the suspect’s identity at this time.

“We were in fear that he was going to do something to that child,” the sheriff added.

As of Friday evening, officials said the 3-year-old child is OK and the mother is in critical condition.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.
