58 Days of Champions: Marana goes 22-0 to win championships in 1967 and 1968
Marana won a state championship in1964 under Duane Morrison and then back-to-back championships in 1967 and 168 under Don Hawkins. Hawkins went 21-0-1 in that time span but he was awarded the win, rather than a 13-13 tie with Hayden in 1967 due to the rules of the Class B conference at the time so he went 22-0. Marana entered the 20 yard line four times in that game compared to three for Hayden.
Tucson Historic Sports Venues and Artifacts: Toumey Park, Vista del Prado Park and Palo Verde Park
Three of the many Little League Parks in the Tucson area that are more or still in existence. Friday, September 29, 1950. That’s the day Tucson Lions Club secretary J. Sydney Pearson made a presentation on bringing Little League to Tucson to three other local civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club. Eight board members were selected from those four organizations and the rest, as some say, is history. The first game was played on Aug. 12, 1951 at Santa Rita Park. Tom Hassey was the winning pitcher for Valley National Bank, 6 to 3 over Minarik Realty. Tony Amado recorded the first home run and A. Barraza scored the first run. Play got underway too late for state that summer but the first local Little League tournament started on Sept. 12, 1951 at the Hi Corbett Fields.

He passed away at age 60 in 2012. He was actively involved for many years as a coach for youth athletics and as a Scout Master in Las Vegas.
Arizona baseball to face defending NCAA champion, runner-up in Houston tourney
Arizona finished the 2024 regular season with the toughest nonconference strength of schedule in the country. The chances of a repeat are looking pretty good. The Wildcats are set to play in the Astros Foundation College Classic in Houston next season, one of two preseason tournaments they’ll have in Texas. Both will see them face stiff competition, with the schedule for this tourney already announced.
The year half over; the glass half full
Just like that, the sports year is half over. It’s been about half-good. There have been some bright spots, but they dim when viewed in terms of what might have been. The UA baseball team shook off some early-season doldrums and stormed to the (final) Pac-12 regular-season title. Then, in dramatic fashion, they added the Pac-12 Tournament title. With all that momentum on their side, they got to host the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Playing in from of a huge Hi Corbett home crowd, they proceeded to lose to (ugh!) Grand Canyon and then (double-ugh-er!) Dallas Baptist.
