Streets and parking lots on the northside of downtown Corning will be closed starting Friday for the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament this weekend. The Chemung County Sheriff's Office reports that Brendan Crowley, an inmate at the Chemung County Jail, is facing new charges after an incident on Monday where he poured hot soup on another inmate, causing significant burns. Elmirans want more park maintenance as dumping discovered near McKinnon Park
Friends of Chemung River Watershed are making the public aware of illegal dumping that’s taken place around McKinnon Park. Chemung River Friends says many don’t know the property that was 1335 Pratt Street is not actually part of the park according to the tax parcel maps. But people have been just illegally dumping their trash because it looks like a dump. There’s even a burnt down structure on the property and no secure fence to keep away children and pets, posing a safety issue.

Fair Friday Ahead
The fair skies continue on Friday with temperatures in the upper-70s and lower-80s. Mostly clear skies overnight will allow lows to drop back into the mid-50s. Patchy fog will be possible after midnight. The dry weather sticks around into the weekend with highs in the mid-80s. Partly sunny skies are expected both days. Monday will start off the week dry with fair skies. Clouds increase Tuesday as our next system moves in. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will start Tuesday and continue through Thursday. Temperatures during this time will be in the 80s under mostly cloudy skies.
Veteran, Dog Die In Genesee Township Fire
Fire crews responded to a house fire in Genesee Township Thursday morning, which claimed the life of its occupant and his dog. The fire began some time before 4;30 in the 1000 block of Clovis Avenue. Firefighters on the scene reported heavy flames at the front and back of the home, which broke though the roof shortly after they arrived. Fire officials say there were explosions on the scene, which may have been caused by oxygen tanks. Once firefighters were able to enter the building, they discovered the body of a man and the dog. Officials say the man was a Vietnam veteran and a double leg amputee. The house is considered a total loss.
