John W. Jones Museum Gets Federal Grant for Expansion
ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- An Elmira museum is getting federal funding to help with its expansion. The John W. Jones Museum at 1248 Davis Street Elmira has been awarded $45,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). The museum preserves the legacy of John W. Jones, who escaped slavery in Virginia the 1840's, and later settled in Elmira. Jones was a key agent on the underground railroad, helping 860 former enslaved people escape to freedom.

Warmer Weekend
High pressure in control over the weekend will keep us mainly dry both Saturday and Sunday, but we can't completely rule out a stray shower or thunderstorm. Temperatures will end up warmer compared to the last couple of days with highs in the mid 80s, the humidity will also come up a bit. Chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase by Tuesday as low pressure pushes into the region.
George F. Cobin, 81, Angelica
George F. Cobin age 81 of Mechanic Street, passed away on Tuesday (July 16, 2024) at UR St James Hospital in Hornell. George was born in Birdsall on September 29, 1942 the son of Hugh Cobin and Betty Seeley Cobin, was graduate of Angelica Central School, and had served in the National Guard. He had worked for Sands Auto Glass delivering out of Buffalo and several other places for 30 years and then opened his own shop called “George’s Glass Shop in Angelica, and had also delivered for the Angelica Bakery for many years with his wife Jean. They were married in 1965, and she predeceased him on May 12, 2022. George enjoyed fishing, mowing lawns (had to be a John Deere his favorite), woodworking, family cookouts especially at the Mt Morris Dam, and his son Brent’s pavilion. He had been very active in Boy Scouting, and had also been an active participant in the Angelica Ambulance, and Angelica Fire Department.

Veteran, Dog Die In Genesee Township Fire
Fire crews responded to a house fire in Genesee Township Thursday morning, which claimed the life of its occupant and his dog. The fire began some time before 4;30 in the 1000 block of Clovis Avenue. Firefighters on the scene reported heavy flames at the front and back of the home, which broke though the roof shortly after they arrived. Fire officials say there were explosions on the scene, which may have been caused by oxygen tanks. Once firefighters were able to enter the building, they discovered the body of a man and the dog. Officials say the man was a Vietnam veteran and a double leg amputee. The house is considered a total loss.

GENESEE TWP., Mich. (WNEM) - A Vietnam veteran and his dog died in a house fire early Thursday morning in Genesee Township. Fire crews were called to the 1000 block of Clovis Avenue for a report of a structure fire with entrapment shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 18.

Leigh A. Johnson 88, formerly of Falconer and Scandia PA, passed away on Friday (July 19, 2024) at the VA Nursing Home in Bath, NY. Leigh was born November 9, 1935 in Jamestown the son of the late Sigurd and Lucy Neate Johnson, he was a lifelong area resident. Leigh was married to Janice (Bishop) from October 1953 until her death in January of 2009. Leigh served in the US Navy and upon his return he was employed by MCR-SKF until his retirement in 1997.
