Oscoda man convicted of threatening Iosco County prosecutor
IOSCO COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - An Oscoda man faces up to six months in jail for threatening the Iosco County prosecutor over a landlord-tenant issue last winter. Court records show an Iosco County jury found 40-year-old Dominque Simo guilty of one count of malicious use of a telecommunications device for threatening Iosco County Prosecuting Attorney James A. Bacarella.

Rick Fern, 71, of Tawas City
Richard Dirk Fern, of Tawas City, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 14, 2024 under the loving care of his wife, family, and hospice, age 71 years. Rick was born on June 29, 1953 in Flint, Michigan to the late Conrad Richard and Carol Stewart (Crist) Fern. He graduated from Fenton High School with the class of 1971, and went on to further his education while studying at Mott Community College, earning his Associates Degree in Arts. During his working career, Rick worked primarily for himself in the black-smithing and gun repair business. Anything to do with guns, Rick was very well versed and knowledgeable, able to repair any type of gun.
Frank Leiva, 97, of Hale
Frank Marvin Leiva, age 97, of Hale, MI, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2024. He was bornin New York City on April 16, 1927, to the late Betty and Frank Leiva. In the 1940s, Frank attended Salisbury School, a preparatory academy in Connecticut. He was a standout athlete in baseball, football, basketball, and rowing. His academic days were cut short, however, as he joined the United States Army to serve in World War II.
Oscoda Man Found Guilty of Threatening Prosecuting Attorney
A jury in Ioscoa county found an Oscoda man guilty last Friday of making a threatening phone call to the Iosco County Prosecuting Attorney. On February 11, 40-year-old Dominique Simo called James Bacarella and told him if he didn’t show up at Simo’s home in 28 minutes, Bacarella would deeply reret it. The threat follows another threat Simo made to Bacarella in 2023 when Simo was a tenant at one of Bacarella’s properties. Simo threatened to shoot the man, according to court documents. With the previous threat of gun violence, Simo was arrested after maing the phone call.

EAST TAWAS – More than 500 flying enthusiasts traveled to the Iosco County Airport in East Tawas on Sunday, July 14, where they gathered for a breakfast of eggs, pancakes and sausage, as part of the Tawas Bay Summerfest activities. (See separate story for more details on the 2024 festival).
Pickleball fundraiser tourney supports NMCAC
EAST TAWAS – Tawas Area Pickleball Association (TAPA) held a Fundraiser Tournament for the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center on June 15. Two sessions of pickleball play included 36 TAPA members. The morning began with 24 men and women competing in a rigorous mixed doubles competition. The second session consisted of 12 women playing in a relaxed ladies doubles format. Both sessions were very exciting with medals awarded to first, second and third place winners.

Judith Elin Shiemke, 86, of Hubbard Lake passed away Sunday, July 14, 2024, at her home. Judith Elin Gallagher was born May 4, 1938, to the late William and D. Elin (Stark) Gallagher. On July 2, 1966, she married David Shiemke. He preceded her in death on January 5, 2016. Judith worked at Alpena Regional Hospital as a registered nurse, retiring in 2003. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, gambling, belly dancing and loved her critters.
