Tawas City officials receive TPA MERS report; authorize lease for Anchor Park
TAWAS CITY – Among the topics of discussion at the July 1 Tawas City Council meeting, was the pension liability for the former Tawas Police Authority (TPA). As reported in this publication, the TPA was once a joint operation between East Tawas and Tawas City, for which the associated costs were split in a 50/50 partnership. Although the TPA dissolved several years ago – with each municipality going on to form their own police departments – the two cities remain responsible for the TPA’s unfunded pension liability through the Municipal Employees’ Retirement System of Michigan (MERS).

TAWAS: Winds kept many anglers off the water. Shore anglers at Gateway Park were trying to find fish but did not have much luck. AuGRES: Anglers reported marking fish, but many were not able to get them to bite. There were a few groups able to bring some walleye home when trolling crawlers around the Charities. Anglers catching their limits seemed to be few and far between the last few days.

Jackie Durant, 69, of Hale
Jacqueline Jean (Flagg) Durant, age 69, passed away at home in Hale, MI, surrounded by her family on July 4th, 2024. She was born to Jack and Jean Flagg on November 11, 1954, in Flint, MI. Jackie attended Flint Southwestern High School. She worked at the Buick Plant for General Motors, retiring after 30 years of employment. She enjoyed pontooning on the lake, trips to the casino, bowling, and mostly spending time with friends and family.

∫ Harrisville’s Sunrise Side Wine, Brew and Food Festival will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 under the big top tent at the Harrisville Harbor of Refuge. The lineup includes local and other Michigan wineries, breweries and a cidery. There will also be food from local restaurants, bakeries and food trucks. Local musicians will be contributing background music of all types. Also exhibiting will be local artists and craftmakers selling original arts and wine-related crafts. Man Arrested In Fatal Iosco County Crash
A 34-year-old Hale man was arrested in Iosco County Tuesday for impaired driving resulting in the death of another man. State Police troopers were called to the scene on M-65 near Slosser Trail around 11:30 P.M. after a collision between a 2013 Ford Taurus and a 2015 Fiat 500. Investigators say the man was driving the Taurus heading north and turned directly into the path of the Fiat, driven by a 42-year-old Hale man. That man was critically injured and died later at a hospital. A 22-year-old Hale woman, who was the victim’s passenger, suffered minor injuries, as did the at fault driver.

ET approves five-year Capital Improvment Plan
EAST TAWAS – Every year, East Tawas officials update the city’s capital improvement plan (CIP) for the next five years. This year’s CIP, which covers the period of 2024-2029, was approved in a 6-0 vote at the June 3 meeting of the East Tawas City Council. The motion for approval was made by Council Member Blinda Baker, and supported by Council Member Joe Kolts. Mayor Pro Tem Lisa Bolen joined the meeting via Zoom and did not vote, as per the council’s procedures for virtual attendance.
