OWAA strengthens its team with new hires
OSCODA – Following the recent resignation of Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport (OWA) Director Jamie Downes, and after a failed attempt to locate a replacement, the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport Authority (OWAA) took a leap of faith. All members of the authority felt that if they could strengthen their airport management team to give Administrator and Property Manager Brenda McNeill and Airport Manager Jack Brown the support staff they need, the two might be able to run the airport without an official director – either temporarily, or potentially permanently.
‘Forever chemicals’ affect economies
OSCODA — Oscoda is known to gather lots of tourists in the summer, thanks to the Au Sable River that runs through it and its sandy beaches along Lake Huron. Eight years ago, Oscoda residents were informed that “forever chemicals” called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS, had made their way into the town’s drinking water. These chemicals are known to be hydrophobic, meaning they fail to mix with water, and can be found in many products such carpets, raincoats, and cookware.

South Branch man sentenced to up 10 years for child sex crimes
IOSCO COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - A South Branch man has been sentenced to spend up to 10 years in prison for child sex crimes. Court records show 24-year-old Philip Durbin pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct of assault with the intent to commit sexual penetration and two counts of possession of child sexually abusive material. Nine other charges, including third-degree criminal sexual conduct, child sexually abusive activity and aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material, were dropped.

Tom Gracik inducted into NEM Hall of Fame
PINCONNING – A Tawas man has been inducted into the NEM Hall of Fame. Tom Gracik, who played for the Tawas City federation ball club, was inducted during a ceremony June 23 at Pinconning Cheese House in Pinconning. He joined fellow honorees Bill Cliff, David Van Horn and Gaylord “Gail” Kohn (posthumously) in the Northern Division; and Pat Thompson, Tony LaRue, Jeff Hart and William “Bill” Carstens Sr (posthumously) in the Southern Division.

Patrick Haggerty, 82, of Hale
Patrick Joseph Haggerty, age 82 of Hale, MI., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 24, 2024 in Tawas City, MI. He was born on March 16, 1942 in Detroit, MI., to the late Frank and Margaret (Tucker) Haggerty. Patrick was born into a large family; he was one of eight children. As a young man he joined the United States Army serving in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1963. Patrick took great pride in his work and loved what he did for a living. He reluctantly retired at the age of 82 from Home Depot and worked an entire 60 years of service in sales. Patrick established many dedicated customers that loved him and co-workers as well.

Derrick Turner, 58, of East Tawas
Derrick Fitzgerald Turner, age 58, of East Tawas, Michigan former resident of Hopkinsville, Kentucky died at his home on Monday, June 24, 2024. He was born the son of the late Ronald and Janice (Wyatt) Turner on November 26,1965 in Quantico, Virginia. Derrick served in the National Guard and worked for various factories in the state of Michigan for several years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid alien hunter. Derrick married his best friend, Lisa, on June 8, 1985. As life often goes through some twists and turns, Derrick and Lisa’s marriage ended, but on June 8, 2013, they happily rededicated their lives to each other and remarried and enjoyed the next 9 years together before Lisa’s passing in 2022.
