Second Touch a Truck a huge success
OSCODA--The streets around Furtaw Field were lined with cars on Saturday, June 15 for the second annual Touch A Truck event. The family-friendly event, organized by Jessica Bravata, owner of Sunrise to Sunshine Events & Marketing LLC, was a fundraiser for the Iosco County Humane Society and the Alcona county Humane Society. Preliminary estimates are that $4,000 were raised.

Grace Chatel, 91, of Oscoda
Grace P. Chatel, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at her home surrounded by family. Grace was born on February 5, 1933 in Alabaster Township, Michigan, where she grew up. She was the daughter of Peter and Grace Baker. Her childhood in Alabaster was a treasured memory as was her families’ heritage as early settlers in the Alabaster community. She graduated from East Tawas High School in 1950, where she was class salutatorian and played girls varsity basketball. She then attended Detroit Business University, after which she worked as a legal secretary for a large Detroit law firm.
USG announces opening of Avery Quarry
ALABASTER Twp. – USG Alabaster leaders, on June 13, announced that gypsum production has gotten underway at their new quarry in Iosco County. The Avery Quarry, named for Michigan native and longtime USG president Sewell Avery, marks a new era of native gypsum production for the 122-year-old company with roots in Alabaster Township.

EAST TAWAS – Local golfer Alex Kaems had been really, really close at setting the single round record at Red Hawk Golf Club in recent weeks. In fact, a couple weeks ago he tied the 18-hole record of 65; which he held with three other golfers. On June 4, playing on the black tees Kaems accomplished the feat, shooting a 64 and giving himself sole possession of the record.
Two businesses evacuated over false bomb threat in Lincoln Township
LINCOLN TOWNSHIP — Two connecting businesses in Lincoln Township were evacuated Tuesday after one received a bomb threat. Lincoln Township Police Chief Gary Soper said his department was dispatched at 12:36 p.m. Tuesday to the Starbucks store at 4678 Red Arrow Highway, just off I-94.
OTB approves salary for new community development director
OSCODA – At its regular Monday, June 10 meeting the Oscoda Township Board of Trustees approved a salary of $48,000 for the new community development director (CDD). Superintendent Tammy Kline reported that she hired former Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce Director Nancy Howse, who currently serves as vice chair of the township’s Economic Improvement Committee (EIC). The salary range for the position is $48,000-$55,000 and Kline recommended a salary of $48,000. The motion by Clerk Josh Sutton to approve the salary, supported by Trustee Robert Tasior, passed unanimously.
East Tawas adopts 2024-2025 budget
EAST TAWAS – “I motion to approve the budget as presented,” offered East Tawas City Council Member Blinda Baker, in response to Mayor Bruce Bolen’s query to the council if they were ready to vote on the city’s 2024-2025 fiscal year (FY) budget, at their June 3 meeting.

OSCODA – Oscoda Area Chapter of The Compassionate Friends (TCF) will host its 10th annual Butterfly Release on Sunday, June 30, at 1 p.m. The Release will take place on the lawn at Sacred Heart Church, located at 5300 N. HARRISVILLE – Officials with District Health Department No. 2 (DHD2) are excited to announce the opening of a new Alcona County public health office in Harrisville. This new office opened starting on Tuesday, June 18 and is located at 117 East Main St., Harrisville. According to officials, this location will offer the same public health services as the current office including clinical and vaccination services as well as environmental health services and community health promotion. This space, which had previously housed Richardson’s Pharmacy, will also provide updated facilities while allowing for easier access for the community through the convenient location and improved handicap accessibility.
