The Armstrong and Osseo legion baseball teams met last week amid improved baseball weather in a 9-0 Orioles win on June 26 at Osseo Senior High.

The Falcons began this legion season with mixed results, narrowly losing 1-0 to Maple Grove in the season opener, before earning a big 12-1 win over Andover on June 12. Osseo found itself on either side of a close battle within the prior week, losing 5-3 to Maple Grove on June 19 and beating Champlin 3-2 on June 20.

Osseo started the June 26 game on a high note, finding three runs in the bottom of the first from two hits to make it 3-0. A scoreless second inning kept it at 3-0 before Osseo found two more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 5-0. Armstrong continued to struggle at bat to create big chances to even out the score, but William Schultz did work hard on the hill to keep Osseo out in the fourth inning.

Osseo’s pitching matched that standard with a strong performance by Jack McHugo. The Falcons did find some momentum in the top of the fifth, getting Evan Levy and Gavin Peterson on the bases with a hit pitch and a single. Osseo did well under pressure and prevented a run before an RBI double for Oriole Gavin Phenow got the hosts scoring again. They added two more, before a tag and catch by Levy cut the damage short. Osseo led 8-0.

Luke Weisjahn won a walk out of a tough battle at-bat to give Armstrong presence on the bases, but good pitching and a tag by Brendan Kranz on Will Hoffrogge at first ended the sixth inning with Osseo ahead 9-0 thanks to a commanding run home by Tyler Rose. Osseo clinched the win in the top of the seventh, helped by two tags by Kranz at first base.

Phenow ended the game with three hits for Osseo alongside teammate Brayden Haag. Fellow Oriole Gavyn Krzoska had two. McHugo threw five shutout innings and had seven kills.

Legion ball will have a holiday break next week, but Armstrong will return to play on July 9, hosting Brooklyn Park. Osseo, meanwhile, will play Blaine at home on July 10.
