Whiteford's Logan Tammerine leads All-Region Baseball team

By Niles Kruger, The Monroe News,

Logan Tammerine moved all around the diamond during his four seasons with Whiteford’s baseball team.

He was a Division 3 All-Stater at third base as a freshman, repeated as a shortstop the next year and made it as a pitcher last season.

That didn’t stop Bobcat coach Terry Pant from tinkering this spring.

“We needed someone in the outfield,” Pant said. “He played outfield a couple of times in travel ball. We put him out there, and he made a nice over-the-shoulder catch and a diving catch. He stuck at outfield after that.”

Tammerine was nominated for All-State this spring as a utility player. He made the second team after hitting .395 with three home runs and going 6-1 on the mound with a 1.42 earned-run average and 97 strikeouts in 54 innings.

Tammerine has been selected Monroe County Region Baseball Player of the Year in voting by The Monroe News sports staff.

He nearly added another position to his resume.

“We needed a catcher one game, and he said, ‘Coach, I can do it,’” Pant said. “We thought about it for a minute, then said no. He’s a true Whiteford kid. 'I will do anything for the team.'”

Tammerine says he doesn’t really mind where he plays as long as he is on the field.

“Shortstop or middle infield,” he said when asked to name his favorite position. “There is a lot of action and a lot of responsibility there, plus that is where I grew up playing.

    “Pitching is my second favorite.”

Tammerine’s velocity on the mound picked up as his career progressed.

“My freshman year I was maybe 84 (mph),” he said. “During my sophomore year, I hurt my arm a little bit and had to take a month off. When I came back, I was at 87. This year I finally hit 90.”

Tammerine is a fierce competitor but makes a point of shaking hands with the home plate umpire before his first at-bat of a game.

“He reminds me of (former Summerfield All-Stater) Derek Clark,” Pant said. “He loves the game and respects it. He respects the umpires. He’s a great competitor who loves baseball.”

The son of Amy and Teddy Peacock, and Patrick Tammerine, learned to honor the umpires from his parents.

“My dad always taught me to respect the umpires,” he said. “They have a hard job.”

Tammerine grew up playing football, basketball, soccer and baseball but decided to concentrate on one sport in the eighth grade.

He capped a great career by helping Whiteford set a school record for wins this spring. The Bobcats won district championships in all four of his seasons and Tri-County Conference titles the last three years.

“It definitely had flown by,” he said of his career at Whiteford. “My senior year blew past like nothing.

“It didn’t end how we expected, but we all had fun. This was the funnest season I’ve ever had.”

Tammerine will play next season for Lincoln Trails Community College in Robinson, Ill. — a school that has a good reputation of developing baseball players.

“Their centerfielder is going to N.C. State, and they have a few more guys who are going Division I,” he said. “Hopefully, they can develop me.”
