Some Punkin Water customers could soon receive city water

If all goes well, some Punkin Water customers may soon have Oxford city water flowing through their pipes.

The main extension project started several months ago; however, the contractor, Eubank Construction Co., hit a few snags – with those snags being rocks and cement.

The main line had to go under a bridge on Highway 6 East that is over a creek, just east of Brittany Woods and it took longer than expected. However, according to city officials, the water line going under the creek has been completed.

“The contractor should make the connection between existing city infrastructure and the new Punkin supply line at the creek (this) week, weather permitting,” said City Engineer John Crawley. “This will bring city water up to the County Road 217 (Campground Road) area.”

The booster pump project to bring city water to the elevated tank is not yet complete so areas further to the east will be a little later coming online, Crawley said.

“But we anticipate this summer sometime,” he said.

The Oxford Board of Aldermen voted in early 2022 to take over the system and provide water for Punkin Water Association customers, who had been complaining about poor water quality for years.
