Possible scattered showers, high temps on 4th of July

The Fourth of July will be a hot one and maybe, just maybe, a slightly wet one.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Lafayette County for today, with the heat index going as high as 107 this afternoon. There is a very slight chance for some late afternoon showers – 20%. Otherwise, today will be sunny and hot.

There is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms mainly after 1 p.m. on Independence Day. The high is expected to be around 94 degrees, with heat index values as high as 105 while the sun is shining.

There is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms late Thursday night, so area fireworks shows shouldn’t be affected, and if it does rain in the afternoon, even better for reducing the fire risks from hot embers falling.

Setting off fireworks within the city of Oxford is not allowed.

There is a greater chance of rain on Friday afternoon. The high is expected to be around 90. According to the NWS, there will be a short break from the excessive heat this weekend.

The high on Saturday and Sunday is expected to be around 89-90 degrees, with a slight chance of some showers here and there, mostly in the afternoon or evening hours.

More rain is expected early next week with the highs around 89-90 degrees for the first couple of days.
