Zaragoza retiring: Oxnard mayor will not seek re-election, ending 60+ years in public service
John Zaragoza’s family was poor and he could not afford to attend college. The Oxnard native, 82, considered joining the military, but during high school he’d already fallen in love with Mary Ellen, to whom he’s still married today. Zaragoza told the Ventura County Reporter that he started working construction jobs to earn a living.
New report shows the Tri-Counties had 90 reported hate crime incidents in 2023
A new report shows that the number of reported hate crimes overall in California is down, but the numbers are up for certain groups. The total number of crimes dropped 7.1% in 2023. But, the State Department of Justice report shows increases in incidents involving the LGBTQ+, Jewish, and Muslim communities.

Dizdar Park takes center stage as upgrade effort launches in Camarillo's Old Town
The launch of a major renovation project at Camarillo's Dizdar Park brought officials to the Old Town site Wednesday morning to celebrate. The $9 million project will upgrade and expand the park at the southeast corner of Ventura Boulevard and Glenn Drive. Plans call for demolition of a vacant office building and former fire station to grow the park's footprint to 1.7 acres.
