Former JCHS staff member receives final sentencing on sex abuse charge
After entering an Alford plea on a single charge of sexual abuse, a former JCHS teacher was given a final sentence in December of five years’ pretrial diversion. The sentence, handed down on Dec. 22, is in line with the sentencing recommended when Darrin Rice, 55, of U.S. 23, Wittensville, entered the Alford plea in August. The final sentencing hearing was originally scheduled for Nov. 20, but was pushed back to Dec. 22.

Coach of the Year: Tim Delong (Johnson Central) - Guided team to 15th Region title in first season as head coach. Team finished 29-5. Shelby Valley’s Miley Riddle — Shelby Valley freshman Miley Riddle is a dynamic player. Riddle can do everything on the volleyball court. She led the Lady Wildcats with 509 kills on the season. She also finished with six blocks, 309 assists, 500 digs and 47 aces. She finished 17th in the state in kills and 43rd in the state in digs.
KCTCS colleges get grants upwards to $6 million to strengthen career pathway
Three colleges within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, including Big Sandy Community and Technical College and Hazard Community and Technical College are among 22 colleges and universities nationwide that will receive federal grants to develop high-quality career pathways aligned to high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand industry sectors and occupations in their regions, KCTCS announced in a statement.

The Johnson County Schools Board of Education approved the purchase of a weapons detection system for Johnson Central High School during its regular meeting on Jan. 22. Inez woman pleads guilty in DUI, child endangerment case
An Inez woman pleaded guilty in Johnson Circuit Court Jan. 12 to charges including DUI and endangering the welfare of a minor linked to a February crash. Rachel Daniels, 36, of Blacklog Road, Inez, was originally arrested in February after reports of a collision at the intersection of U.S. 23 and Ky. 1750, in she was discovered to be impaired and in possession of suspected methamphetamine while driving with a child in the vehicle and operating on a suspended license, according to court documents.
Hager Hill man pleads guilty in multiple cases
A Hager Hill man is facing a possible 12-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges linked to a 2022 incident and subsequent charges. Brian Wilson, 30, of Ky. 2039, Hager Hill pleaded guilty Jan. 12 in Johnson Circuit Court to reduced charges of first-degree and first-offense trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, for which Johnson Commonwealth’s Attorney Tony Skeans has recommended he serve 12 years in prison. As a part of the plea deal, Wilson has agreed to forfeit all property seized in the cases.
