An 18-year-old Merritt Island man is dead and three others injured following a traffic crash Sunday morning, just south of St. John’s Heritage Parkway in Palm Bay, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The unnamed driver was traveling southbound on Interstate 95 in a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. Neither the driver nor his unidentified three passengers were wearing seat belts, the highway patrol reported.

Two passengers, both 18-year-old women, were from Cocoa. Another passenger was a 17-year-old from Merritt Island. All three passengers sustained severe injuries and were hospitalized and listed in critical condition, troopers reported.

Troopers said that for an unknown reason, the driver overcorrected and ran off the highway. The Pathfinder flipped over several times. The driver and his three passengers were all thrown from the overturning vehicle, troopers reported.

All lanes on I-95 were reopened by 2 p.m., the highway patrol reported.

The crash was reported at about 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 165.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were briefly closed and traffic was rerouted as troopers investigated the wreck.

The teens injured in the crash were transported to Health First's Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. An investigation is ongoing.
