Dolphins vs. Commanders: Kendall Fuller intercepts former team, but also allows TD

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins cornerback Kendall Fuller intercepted rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels on the final play of Thursday's joint practice.

Fuller, who played his last four seasons with the Washington Commanders, was swarmed by Miami teammates inside the indoor facility where the last practice period happened.

Fuller was covering former teammate Terry McLaurin, who slipped on an out route.

"I think the first or second rep of practice, he had a touchdown on me," Fuller said of McLaurin. "So to be able to make a play at the end, but just to go back and forth and compete against guys, go against a different team. So it was fun, man. Just a blessing. It'll be fun on Saturday to compete with everybody."

Fuller plans to play for Miami in Saturday night's preseason game against Washington at Hard Rock Stadium.

According to Pro Football Reference, Fuller yielded a passer rating of 120.4 and nine touchdowns in Washington last season. Washington's scheme and Fuller's teammates weren't very good.

"Made some plays and gave up some plays," Fuller said when asked to assess his 2023 season. "I think I played pretty good, As a group, we didn't play to our standard last year. But, genuinely, that's a question I genuinely don't even think about as much, being somewhere new. A new year,"

Washington was 4-13 last year and drafted the quarterback Daniels second overall. Daniels was pretty impressive in Thursday's practice.

"I like him, man," Fuller said of Daniels. "I haven't watched the tape yet, but just how he carries himself. He looks like a pro. He looks like he has an edge. Looks like he's trusting his ability."

But Fuller is in a much better situation in Miami, where the goal this season is to win playoff games.

"Right now, I like the standard that we have here," Fuller said. "The standard that we hold one another to, that the coaches hold each other to, the players hold each other to."

Fuller wore an orange jersey on Thursday as player of the last Dolphins practice.

Can Kendall Fuller fill Xavien Howard's Miami Dolphins shoes?

Fuller is stepping in for former Dolphins' Pro Bowler Xavien Howard, and playing opposite star Jalen Ramsey, who was held out on Thursday.

"It's been exciting and I'm excited to try to do something big here," Fuller said.
