Miami Dolphins roster cuts overreactions after trim to 53 players

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins made roster cuts to bring the team to 53 players before the NFL cut down deadline at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

White is joining the Buffalo Bills practice squad. Gallimore is joining the Los Angeles Rams' roster.

Among the notable cuts this offseason were quarterback Mike White , tight end Jody Fortson, wide receiver Erik Ezukanma , running back Chris Brooks, defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and defensive tackle Jonathan Harris.

The Dolphins, without Blake Ferguson, don't have a long snapper

Overreaction? Yes. The Dolphins likely left snapper Blake Ferguson off the roster only long enough to put another player, perhaps linebacker Anthony Walker, on injured reserve. Don't worry. The Dolphins will have a snapper. And every indication is it will remain Ferguson.

Without Erik Ezukanma, the Dolphins have only four receivers

Overreaction? No. Obviously Miami would like to have more than four healthy receivers. But Odell Beckham, Jr., will miss at least four games. Ezukanma was waived. Braylon Sanders was cut. Tahj Washington is on injured reserve. The Dolphins can either add a veteran. Or they can promote a receiver from practice squad for each game until Beckham returns. It would be nice to add Ezukanma to practice squad. Tight end Tanner Conner over Ezukanma was probably debated. It's possible Miami can at times use Conner and/or running back De'Von Achane at "receiver."

Ethan Bonner and Storm Duck as number two cornerbacks is a problem

Overreaction? No... but with a but. Bonner and Duck are undrafted by they are athletic, have ball skills and good potential. Until Cam Smith returns from injury - he'll miss at least four games - these are your top backups to Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller. It's always possible Miami could move Kader Kohou outside and go with Duck inside. But Bonner is probably ahead of him and plays mostly outside.

No Bradley Chubb, but do we really need 10 linebacker/edge rushers?

Overreaction? No... but with a but. It was a bit of a surprise that Duke Riley and Channing Tindall and Quinton Bell all made the initial 53. But we have to keep in mind special teams. Riley is a core special teamer. And special teams coach Danny Crossman probably likes Tindall and Bell as options on this new dynamic kickoff setup.

Cutting Mike White was dumb; he's the best third QB option

Overreaction? Yes. Probably. Look, White did not beat out Thompson. And we'll see who Miami adds as a third quarterback. But it seems White's time with Miami had run out from the perspective of Miami and White, who joined the Bills practice squad. The Dolphins don't really need a third quarterback on the 53-man roster. They can elevate a quarterback to the active game day roster up to three times during the year if they're concerned about the health of one or two of their top two quarterbacks.
