BOYNTON BEACH — Two people were killed and four others injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision west of Boynton Beach in which one of the cars violently rolled over, police said Sunday.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigators said a 2004 Toyota Corolla driven by 25-year-old Mariela Alfaro of Lake Worth Beach was traveling west on Armone Place approaching the intersection with State Road 7 at about 3:42 p.m. Friday. Four people were riding in the car with her, deputies said.

Alfaro crossed all the northbound lanes of SR7, then drove through the center median break into the south lanes of the road. Traveling in the center southbound lane at the time was a 2016 Toyota RAV4 driven by Santiago Zazquez-Durand, 20, of Coral Springs. Alfaro “violated [the RAV4’s] right of way … causing the ensuing collision,” a sheriff’s report said.

After the crash, the Corolla rotated and traveled to the shoulder of the road, where “it immediately tripped and rolled over violently,” the report said, coming to rest upside-down. Two passengers in the Corolla, Roben Desarmes, 52, of Boynton Beach, and Yulissa Medrano Perez, 40, of Lake Worth Beach, were ejected from the car and came to rest in the swale on the shoulder.

Desarmes and Medrano Perez, who were not wearing seatbelts, were pronounced dead at the scene by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, deputies said.

Zazquez-Durand’s SUV also rotated as a result of the crash and ended up on the SR7 shoulder. He sustained minor injuries. Alfaro and two other passengers, a 25-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, both from Lake Worth Beach, were taken to Delray Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Charges are pending in the accident, sheriff’s deputies said.
