More record heat unlikely this week in Coachella Valley

Sunday was another blisteringly hot day in Palm Springs, but it wasn’t enough for a record. The city fell four degrees short of the July 21 record of 120 degrees, set in both 2023 and 2006.

That means record books-watching locals had to content themselves with Saturday’s record-setting 120, which just eked past the previous July 20 record of 119 degrees.

Temperatures will remain brutally high in the coming days, but National Weather Service meteorologist Ivory Small said it was unlikely any more records will be set as temperatures are expected to further dip, starting with a forecasted high of 112 degrees on Monday.

That modest cooling trend was expected to continue throughout the week as the high-pressure system that has fueled the recent run of particularly intense heat is expected to remain in place but weaken some by the weekend.

That forecasted high for Monday was well below the current July 22 record of 121 degrees set in 2006. However, Small said it was still above the average high for this time of year of about 109 degrees. By Sunday, the high is expected to drop to 108 degrees. While it’s a stretch to say that represents much in the way of true relief, it at least brings temperatures more in line with the toasty averages for this time of year.

Still, a National Weather Service excessive heat warning remained in effect through Wednesday night, with the agency reminding people that temperatures remain dangerously high and they should limit their time in the sun, drink plenty of water and check on elderly neighbors.

And there was a small chance some more immediate relief could also come via more of the kind of monsoonal storms the Coachella Valley saw to start last week. The chance of precipitation has been pegged at 20% for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before things dry out toward the second half of the week.
