Guest Opinion | Mary Lea Carroll: Historic Highlands Home-Grown 4th of July Celebration
Like a mustard seed, the Historic Highlands parade and potluck started tiny —with just a good idea, and a few families willing to do something fun for their children. Hey, why not take over the street and have a parade! Back in the 90s, this old-timey American notion began as just an adorable parade of decorated trikes and scooters that could barely make it around the block. Maybe 25 kids, total. The parents brought pies to our shady front lawn and after this ten-minute parade, everyone enjoyed apple pie and ice cream. But each year it grew, so within a few years, the whole street was filling up. Red wagons turned into Washington’s boat crossing the Delaware, or Conestoga wagons heading west. Vintage tractors showed up. The fire department with their big hoses, showed up. Moms hosted ruckus games of water ballon fights, three-legged races, watermelon eating contests. And it continued to grow. For a while, a kid’s only craft fair. Raffled items from neighborhood businesses, a full on 80’ row of tables for the potluck. One of the neighborhood dads, Mitch, who’s been grilling hamburgers and hotdogs at the parade for years said, “Now so many people attend you can’t know them all. I met a couple who moved to this neighborhood just because of this event!” He smiled broadly. “I say, the more the merrier.”
