Have You Got It Yet?: The Story Of Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd (Mercury Studios)

Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd crystalized a cultural moment where anything seemed possible but where that freedom could come with a cost. Was Syd just another drug casualty? Did he suffer from an undiagnosed mental condition? Or did he dislike the attention and fame as the fun turned to work? While there are no clear answers which might be the case, there is the feeling by all those around Syd that something went terribly wrong. Have You Got It Yet?: The Story Of Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd is a chronicle and a mosaic of Barrett’s creative and destructive impulses, his captivating presence and absence - a portrait of the complex puzzle that was his life.

This questions and more are answered within the new documentary Have You Got It Yet?: The Story Of Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd, as directed by award-winning filmmaker Roddy Bogawa (Taken By Storm: The Art of Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis) and the late, acclaimed cover designer Storm Thorgerson (Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Black Sabbath). As produced by Mercury Studios, Believe Media, A Cat Called Rover, Orian Williams, Rupert Truman and Roddy Bogawa -- and Executive Produced by Alice Webb, Geoff Kempin, Paul Loasby, Liz Silver and Luke Thornton -- Have You Got It Yet was narrated by Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The Patriot). Archival footage and narration aside, it features interviews with Pink Floyd members David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Roger Waters, original band managers Peter Jenner and Andrew King, and many notable musicians (e.g. The Who’s Pete Townshend, Blur’s Graham Coxon).

The Plain & Simple Guide To Music Publishing by Randall Wixen

Simply put, Randall Wixen is one of the most respected names in today's music industry. The founder of Wixen Music Publishing, Inc. in Los Angeles, with a sister company, Wixen Music UK Ltd. in London, the companies administer the song catalogs of many top artists from the last 50 years, including Santana, The Doors, Missy Elliot, Al Green,The Black Keys, Andrew Bird, Angel Olsen, and Sturgill Simpson.

As released this past week, the fifth edition of Randall Wixen's widely-praised book The Plain & Simple Guide To Music Publishing is now out via Hal Leonard. The new edition features an array of new topics pegged to the ever-changing music industry landscape. In Wixen's words: “This fifth edition... constitutes the biggest change of any edition of this book since the first. There have been so many changes in music publishing over the past few years including two CRB hearings and the results of various appeals to the rates which those hearings determined, the passage of the music modernization act, the operation of the MLC, the conversion of BMI from a non-profit organization to a for-profit organization, the mania and hype for catalog sales and much much more. Anyone seeking to operate in or make meaningful decisions about music publishing matters needs the information this updated book contains.” The book, notably, features a foreword penned by the late Tom Petty.

    Tequila Don Julio

National Tequila Day was recently celebrated on July 24th, and in celebration of that the award-winning Tequila Lone Ranger celebrated what it believed to be this summer’s most popular pink cocktail, The Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger aside, Tequila Don Julio Rosado is an exquisite Reposado tequila that's aged at least four months in Ruby Port wine casks to impart a light fruit finish and delicate pink hue.

    Q Mixers

Q Mixers’ tonics make for an ideal addition for just about any cocktail, with a focus on premium ingredients. Its line of tonics include Spectacular Tonic Water (crisp, highly carbonated, and dry), Light Tonic Water (clean, crisp, and not too sweet, without the artificial taste of “Diet” tonics made by the big guys) and Elderflower Tonic Water (fragrant, crisp, and clean, it adds an marvelous floral edge to your favorite cocktail). Its Bloody Mary Mixer is a non-tonic Q Mixers favorite of mine, while its Marg flavor is a popular new addition to the Q Mixers portfolio.

In 2022 I had the pleasure of doing a quick Q&A with actor/comedian Joel McHale and Chef Esther Choi about Q Mixers, which you can watch here, while Paltrobox unboxings related to this brand can be seen here and here.

Either way, this one is reportedly a blend of the best vintages of the last decade (2019, 2018, 2020, 2017, 2016) selected as "the maximum expression of the vineyard throughout its history." Looking forward to eventually trying other Famiglia Pasqua greats, like 11 Minutes and Fear No Dark.

Stands For DeciBels by The dB's

Last but definitely not least... Eclectic indie power pop fans rejoice: The dB’s have announced their first set of tour dates in 12 years. This run of concerts will feature all original members of The dB's: Peter Holsapple (vocals, guitar), Chris Stamey (vocals, guitar), Gene Holder (bass), and Will Rigby (drums).

Propeller Sound Recordings issued the debut album Stands For deciBels on all digital platforms on June 7th and the CD and vinyl reissue (reportedly its first time on vinyl in the U.S.) followed a week later on June 14th. The CD edition included the bonus track “Judy,” a single not included on the original release.

Per R.E.M.’s Mike Mills about The dB’s’ Stands for deciBels: “This is the one that let me know we weren’t alone, that there were others out there with the same curiosity, the same willingness to dive into melody, structure and pop sensibility with no fear, no reserve, only joy and well-deserved excitement. I still love listening to Stands for deciBels, and I always will."

Stands For deciBels was produced by the band in association with the late Alan Betrock, founder of the seminal post-punk publication New York Rocker, with Don Dixon, Scott Litt and Martin Rushent mixing. It was originally issued in 1981 on UK-based Albion Records.

Later this summer, the band is expected to announce additional tour dates as well as a fall multi-format reissue of its second album, Repercussion. A possible Paltrocast interview with one or more of The dB's may be posting in the Fall.
