BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – The Alabama Supreme Court has ruled against a number of local churches trying to leave the United Methodist Church.

44 congregation churches in south Alabama and the Panhandle sued the United Methodist Conference for preventing them from disaffiliating.

The court upheld a lower court ruling that this is an internal church matter and the courts do not have jurisdiction. The conflicts began in 2022 when the United Methodist Church changed its rules to allow same-sex marriages and ordaining lgbtq ministers.

Some of the churches in our area that tried to leave are Gulf View United Methodist Church in Panama City Beach, the First Church of Mexico Beach, Cypress United Methodist Church in Jackson County, Blountstown United Methodist Church, Shalimar United Methodist, and the First Church of Fort Walton Beach.
