SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. ( WMBB ) – The 4th of July is one of three days out of the year when Florida residents can purchase and set off fireworks on their property, and local first responders want to ensure citizens stay safe and aware during the holiday.

Some of the most important things to know when it comes to safety include having an adult supervising fireworks use, having a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby to dispose of the fireworks properly, using a long lighter, and wearing eye and hand protection.

Other things to be aware of are to set off any fireworks on flat concrete and not near any wooded area or garages as a firework could start a fire.

Most of all first responders want you to know that it is best to leave the fireworks displays in the hands of professionals.

“We want to make sure that we leave the shows to the pros,” said South Walton Fire District Fire Inspector Troy Sjostrom. “These guys are out there, they’re professionals, they know what they’re doing, how they’re handling it. They also know the safety distances and the proper way to dispose as well. Leave the shows to the pros and enjoy the show.”

Consider that even small sparklers that can be bought at grocery stores can get as hot as 1200 degrees.

If an accident does happen and you need to call 911 have the area clear so first responders can get there quickly and do not crowd around the injured person.

Be sure to not forget about your pets during the celebrations.

Keep them in a safe, calm place like a bedroom or kennel.
