Flags are retired when they’re no longer suitable for display. They are supposed to be burned in a dignified manner. Boy Scout Pack 382 Cub Master Geoffrey Helms said it’s important to teach the community how to respect the flag, even when it’s out of commission.

“This is an important symbol of our country and all that so many have fought and died for just so many things with it. It’s not a piece of trash, not something you just throw away, go to the dump to sit around there and be further desecrated. This is something that needs to be respected, revered,” Helms said.

The ceremony will be held at the American Legion Post 392 in Panama City at 9:00 a.m. The public is invited to join.
