If you have a dog that loves going to the pet store, you know that their most favorite part of going is that they get to pick out a toy. When they pick it out, they're going to latch onto it, and letting go is not an option.

Recently, a dog mom took her Greyhound to the pet store with her. Being that he's the size of a small horse, the toy he picked out was pretty big. He needed everyone to see it, and now, you need to see it too:

I'm so glad that Maria loves Johnny enough to let him pick out a toy and then flaunt it to strangers. The strangers definitely love him, too!

Johnny is just about the sweetest boy you'll ever see. He's also fairly new to his new home: he came home in June, after years of racing. Maria adopted him from a local rescue that specializes in ex-racing Greyhounds! Since coming home, he's found he loves a few things, including:

    1. Jammies
    2. Picking fights with his bed
    3. Rediscovering toys he forgot about for a while.
    4. Mom. A lot.

Since he brought that mushroom home, he's been absolutely obsessed with it, and he even tries to take it outside with him. If any of the lucky strangers who got to watch him pick it out ever see him with it on a walk, they'll totally remember him!

What Toys are Best for Rescue Dogs?

Many rescue dogs have it rough, especially Greyhounds. They often don't have toys to play with, and as you can imagine, going from a lack of toys to being surrounded by them can be quite jarring. When your rescue dog first comes home, you should have a few options available, including:

    1. Soft toys that don't squeak at all
    2. Chew toys without squeakers
    3. Tennis balls
    4. Treat puzzle toys
    5. 1-2 toys that do squeak, but softly

The loud noise from the squeakers can really frighten some dogs, so exposure to squeakers should be slow. Instead of getting them a ball that squeaks, since it'll squeak loudly, try giving them a stuffed animal toy that squeaks instead. The stuffing muffles the noise.

Eventually, most dogs will come around to squeaky toys - they love them. Squeaky toys satisfy their instincts. You might also need to teach your dog how to play: if they were racing dogs, for example, they're only taught how to run, not how to play. Be careful, take your time, and let them know that you love them!
